What is it about Nature Play pedagogy?
I had a fascinating conversation this week with a Deputy Principal in Queensland about the value and importance of unstructured nature play in schools.
It triggered a memory of my childhood when I was let loose by the adults to roam and explore the local area. The only rule was “be safe”.
Those roaming days were the foundation of my adulthood…and look where it has ended up. Because my imagination was allowed to flourish in nature as a kid, I can use my wild imagination to create amazing playgrounds for kids.
Maybe that’s why I am always trying to add nature play elements into the primary school playgrounds I design. Unstructured play is so important, in my humble opinion
When I observe children engaging in nature play I notice they are there for longer, even when there is a whole adventure playground around them. Students seem to get lost in their own imagination and enter a realm where they are setting their own play parameters
