Playgrounds CAN be for everyone

Playgrounds CAN be for everyone

I want to share with you a recent disappointing conversation.

I had an enquiry from a school who needs and wants an all-inclusive playground so the entire cohort of students can play and enjoy themselves together at break time. The school has several students who use wheelchairs.

The school had been searching for a long time for a playground designer who was willing to take on the job or could meet the brief. The school was even told by one, that it was not possible to create a playground that could suit the needs of everyone.

I strongly disagree! It definitely is possible to create an all-inclusive playground that meets the needs of every child whether they be in a wheelchair,  neurodiverse or neurotypical. It just takes thought, good design and meaningful consultation with stakeholders.

This has really made me upset and has lit a fire in my belly. As a playground designer I am disappointed that schools should have to work so hard to cater for the needs of ALL students.

I have recently designed and built two stunning, wheelchair accessible activity boats for Queensland schools and I want to do more. I am also about to help another school retrofit a playground to make it more accessible for their students. It IS possible and its being done.

If you would like to talk to me about creating an accessible playground, I would genuinely welcome your call. Feel free to call Andrew on 0466 166 054 or email Andrew@everythingoutside.com.au
