Playgrounds influence enrolments: here’s why

When it comes to private school enrolments, academic results, reputation, and values have always been central to parent decision-making. But the landscape is shifting. Children themselves now have a significant say in which school they attend—and that means playgrounds have become more important than ever.

Children’s influence is growing

Recent studies highlight that school choice is increasingly a family decision, not just a parental one. Research from the Independent Schools Council of Australia shows that more than 40% of parents report actively seeking their child’s input before finalising enrolment decisions. The same trend is happening overseas too, with a 2022 UK report by ISC Research finding that over half of families considered their child’s preference a “decisive factor.”

For younger students, these preferences are shaped by how the school “feels” to them and whether they can picture themselves playing and growing there.

The role of the playground

For primary-aged children, one of the most memorable parts of a school tour is the playground. While parents might be focused on curriculum or facilities, children make fast emotional connections with spaces that invite imagination and social interaction. When children are visibly excited on a tour, parents often interpret that as a sign of “fit.”

Enrolments are competitive

In today’s competitive private school environment, small differentiators can sway enrolments. A 2023 report from Independent Schools Australia noted that parent satisfaction and student enthusiasm are two of the strongest predictors of retention and word-of-mouth enrolments.

An uninspiring playground is a missed opportunity. An innovative one can be the moment that tips a decision in the school’s favour.

So for leaders an engaging playground is no longer just an amenity—it’s an enrolment strategy that directly supports parent decision-making and child enthusiasm.
