Adventure Playgrounds
Brisbane Boys’ College
WHERE
Kensington Terrace, Toowong
Brisbane Boys’ College approached Everything Outside to design and install a themed playground in a high-traffic primary school area. The playground needed to meet specific functional requirements while also promoting imaginative play. The brief included requests to retain the existing sandpit, incorporate water play and nature play elements, avoid the use of logs, and include stepping stones and a riverbed. Additionally, the design needed to provide built-in storage for play equipment, and landscape with trees. Emergency vehicle access, placement under shade sails, and creating a boundary with landscaping between the road and the riverbed were also crucial requirements.
The Challenge
The primary challenge was to meet these specific functional requirements while creating an imaginative and themed playground within a tight three-week timeframe. Additionally, the playground had to be versatile and durable to accommodate frequent use by the campus community.
The Solution
Everything Outside designed and crafted “Ship Ahoy!” – an adventure ship-themed playground made from Australian hardwood. The playground featured multilevel climbing and exploring areas, encouraging physical activity and adventure. Interactive panels were included to stimulate imaginative play and engagement. A dry riverbed swept around the ship, adding a natural element and enhancing the thematic design. The sandpit, water play, and nature play elements were seamlessly integrated into the playground, providing diverse play experiences. Stepping stones and the riverbed added further play value and met the brief requirements. Practical elements such as built-in storage for play equipment and a seating bench with a lid were included to enhance functionality. Trees were planted for natural shading, and landscaping created a boundary between the road and the riverbed. The design allowed for shaded seating that could be converted for emergency vehicle access when needed, and the entire playground was covered with shade sails to protect the children from the sun.
Fantastic Outcome
The “Ship Ahoy!” playground was a great success, becoming a central feature of the primary school area and providing a versatile and engaging space for students. It met all functional requirements and was designed to withstand heavy use. The imaginative and thematic design captured the students’ interest, encouraging active and creative play. The project was completed within the three-week timeframe, demonstrating Everything Outside’s ability to deliver high-quality, customized playgrounds efficiently.
