Toowoomba Anglican School
WHERE
Campbell Street, East Toowoomba
The front courtyard at Toowoomba Anglican School occupies one of the most visible locations on campus. Every day it welcomes students, staff, families, and visitors, making it far more than just an outdoor space—it is part of the school’s first impression.
When the school approached Everything Outside, they were looking for a courtyard that would reflect the quality, character, and excellence for which the school is known. The space needed to be beautiful, practical, and capable of supporting multiple uses throughout the school day.
Complicating the project was the fact that the courtyard would replace a mature and much-loved tree that held a special place within the school community. Any new space would need to deliver such a positive outcome that the community would feel the transformation was worthwhile.
A Space with Many Roles
The courtyard needed to perform several important functions simultaneously.
It would serve as an outdoor learning environment where classes could gather in a comfortable and engaging setting. It needed to function as a yarning circle that encouraged conversation, connection, and reflection. It would also operate as a practical waiting area and collection point for students and families.
Rather than treating these requirements as separate elements, the design brings them together in a cohesive and elegant way.
Custom curved timber seating creates a series of gathering spaces that naturally encourage discussion, collaboration, and community interaction. The circular forms create a strong sense of inclusion while providing flexibility for both formal and informal use.
Making a Statement at the Front Door
Because of its prominent location, the courtyard needed to communicate something important about the school itself.
Every aspect of the design was carefully considered to reflect the school’s commitment to quality. From the rich timber detailing and precision craftsmanship through to the generous proportions and thoughtful layout, the space demonstrates that excellence is found in the details.
The result is a courtyard that feels welcoming and sophisticated while remaining highly functional for everyday school life.
For prospective families visiting the campus, the space immediately reinforces the message that Toowoomba Anglican School values quality environments, student wellbeing, and thoughtful design.
Comfort Through Shade
Given the courtyard’s role as a gathering and waiting space, providing protection from the Queensland climate was essential.
Large architectural umbrellas were incorporated into the design, creating comfortable outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The shade not only improves usability but also creates a striking visual focal point that enhances the overall presence of the courtyard.
A New Community Gathering Place
Replacing a beloved tree is never an easy decision. The challenge was not simply to fill a vacant space, but to create something that would become equally valued by the school community.
Today, the courtyard has become a destination in its own right. Students gather to learn, families connect while waiting, and visitors experience a strong sense of arrival as they enter the campus.
The space honours the significance of what came before by creating something equally meaningful for future generations of students.
