In space-constrained schools—particularly those in inner-city areas—creating a new playground can seem impossible. Buildings, carparks, and sports courts dominate the grounds, and the question arises: Where would a playground even go?
The answer may lie in areas you’re overlooking.
Many schools have under-utilised zones that, with creative thinking, can be transformed into dynamic, engaging play spaces. A large landscaped garden, for example, might be beautiful but functionally limited for children. By reimagining it as a nature play area, schools can introduce timber decking, climbing pods, a dry river bed, and quiet spaces for reflection or group play. These zones still retain their natural charm but now serve as functional, inclusive, and educational environments.
Another option is reviewing existing garden beds or planted areas. With careful planning and relocation of flora, you may discover enough room for physically challenging equipment or climbing structures. The key is identifying areas that are currently aesthetic-only and giving them dual purpose without compromising the beauty of your grounds.
A great example of this approach is the recent transformation at Bishop Druitt College, delivered by Everything Outside. The school needed a new play space but couldn’t see where it could go. A large bed of agapanthus plants was taking up prime real estate near the school entrance. Instead of removing the greenery entirely, the plants were carefully relocated to other parts of the school. This made way for a two-tiered playground that now adds vertical interest, layered play opportunities, and improved flow—all while enhancing the front entrance of the school. What was once a passive green area is now an active, exciting welcome zone that impresses prospective parents and inspires students.
Creating new play opportunities doesn’t always mean finding new space—it means seeing the existing space differently. With the help of an experienced playground designer, schools can unlock the full potential of their grounds, even when it feels like there’s no room left to move.
Sometimes, all it takes is shifting a few plants to plant the seeds for something extraordinary.
