There’s a special kind of magic that happens when every child can play side by side at school. There’s the collective laughing, exploring, and creating memories together without barriers. For me, that’s the true power of an inclusive playground.
My latest completed playground at Toowoomba East State School is designed so that children of all abilities can play together, it does more than just meet accessibility standards. It transforms the entire school community.
For a child who uses a wheelchair, playtime often means watching from the sidelines or having to play in the library. But when a playground is designed to be fully inclusive — with ramps to elevated decks, sensory-rich zones, wide pathways, and imaginative spaces that encourage shared play — something wonderful happens.
That child is no longer an observer; they’re part of the fun. They can wheel up to the water pump, cross the bridge with their friends, or reach the top of the treehouse to see the world from above. The simple joy of being included has a profound impact on confidence, friendship, and emotional wellbeing.
Lessons Beyond the Playground
When classmates see their friend in a wheelchair playing right alongside them, it changes the way they view inclusion. Children learn empathy, understanding, and acceptance not from a classroom lesson, but from real experiences of shared play.
Inclusive playgrounds teach every student that diversity is something to be celebrated — that everyone belongs, and that great things happen when environments are designed for all.
An inclusive playground also benefits teachers, parents, and the wider school community. It becomes a space where families gather, where differences fade, and where the culture of inclusion extends beyond the school gate. It’s a visible statement of a school’s values — a commitment to equity, belonging, and joy for every child.
Built with Purpose
Creating a truly inclusive playground takes expertise. It’s about more than compliance — it’s about thoughtful design and listening to what every child needs. The result is not just a playground, but a place where the whole community connects, grows, and thrives.
